This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-05-19

Welcome to another massive week in Kickstarterland. I am embarassed to say how many projects I backed this week and clearly I am not alone. $9 computers, water filters, levitating light bulbs, lots more modular electronics kits, deconstructed kettles and TWO space programs.

A quick farewell to the Ninja Blocks team. Go forth and built great new stuff.

GoFar – An Aussie OBDII device and platform which tells you real time performance characteristics and guides you into your car’s sweet spot.
CHIP – This $9+ computer has caught people’s attention. Surprising given its really just a Pi with better marketing.
Kokoon – An affordable sleep assistant plus noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones.
Phree – A 3D pen-shaped mobile input device using fricking laser beams.
Naked Filter – Winners of Tech Crunch Disrupt NY 2015 they are using nanofibres to filter water.
Atmoph – A digital window, this time in 4K with recorded and live streaming content from around the world. Great use of colour to manipulate the viewer.
Nuimo – A nicely designed smart home controller. Very similar to the late Ninja Blocks.
Weatherpoint – A weather station on a keychain. Four environmental sensors powered by your smartphone audio plug.
Makey Makey Go – It’s back, now plug and play.
iMbrief – Briefcase with GPS, Bluetooth, battery digital stoage and fingerprint scanner.
Flyte – A totally gorgeous levitating induction light bulb. Stupidly expensive unfortunately.
The Sound Torch – Synchronise audio with fire. Awesome but I hope they have good insurance. The first campaign I have seen with an 18 month delivery promise.
Halo – Another connected smoke alarm. This time with promises of extra safetiness.
Lumkani – Networked fire detector for high density slums, shacks and shantee towns.
Oak – Finally after four versions Digistump have built an Arduino compatible Electric Imp.
Modulo – A plug-and-play platform agnostic modular dev kit.
Cubit – Another plug and play platform this time with a drag and drop software interface. Now you don’t need hardware OR software skills.
LightUp Faraday – Welcome back LightUp, the original littleBits clone! Now with more software.
MakerBloks – Another littleBits clone. Why do they all claim to be the first? Why does it bother me so much?
SmartMatrix – We haven’t seen a LED display in quite a while. I always enjoy these projects.
Sprite – A rugged drone helicopter.
Lily – After many delays, Lily has finally launched but is still not shipping until next year. At least it is lovely. I really like the water-launch. Without collision avoidance it is going to have some issues.
Reach – Tiny RTK GPS module built on the Intel Edison.
Kien – A flexible wireless sound system that can be split into parts or used as a group. A very new way of thinking about sound.
Miito – A new way to boil water. Sort-of a deconstructed induction kettle.

Left Fielders

Space Coffee Cup – Buy yourself a cup designed for drinking coffee in microgravity environments. Yep, a space cup.
LightSail – Help send a cubesat up to space to test a solar sail. Will go up with SpaceX’s first flight. Brought to you by Bill Nye and the Planetary Society.
Thongarang – Showing the true face of Australians, this little beauty probably won’t return if thrown.
Fizzics – Redefining the perfect beer poor and giving the best head around.
Hub+ – For everyone that hates Apple for putting one USB-C port on their new laptop.
Crescendo – A flexible bendy vibrator for flexible bendy couples and women with personalised vibration patterns.

Shitstarters

MedWand – A remote medical data collector for telemedicine patients. I am not convinced by “doctors” with bow ties who uses words like “catastrophic”. The cheese factor is off the chart with this one.
Way – Why would anybody buy this stupid product? Is it because someone is wearing a white coat?
Hook – A cheap-arse home controller kit / universal remote control for cheap arses with cheap arse RF controlled home automation systems.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-05-04

Welcome to a bumper week in Kickstarterland and May the Forth be with you. We have a record number of Shitstarts this week, from all around the world. But there are still some shining highlights in luggage, smartphone cases and connected bike bedals.

Barracuda – It has been a while since we have seen a runaway luggage project. What a battle they are fighting.
nexpaq – A modular smartphone case. Depending on the utility of the modules, this could be great.
Connected Pedal – Gyro powered GPS tracker with a built-in global GSM, all built into a securely attached bike pedal. I have to say, they appear to have thought of everything.
Playbrush – I think this looks a bit off (or maybe just a bit unpolished) but it can’t be worse than the status quo. Anything to get the kids to brush more regularly is worth trying.
Parcel Nest – A pretty good solution to an annoying problem. It still doesn’t help for signature-required packages, its a bit big and ugly and it’s a bit uncalled-for to blame the postal service if you can’t be home to receive a package.
MetaWear – They are back this time with a sensor-packed version of their Bluetooth wearable.
Bluz – Another Bluetooth development kit built on the new Spark Cloud. I like the use of small cheap gateway to bridge to the internet. Not quite the same as direct Wifi but has the advantages of lower power.
Ikawa Home Roaster – For the coffee nuts amongst us, you can now roast your own coffees. Your house will smell awesome. It’s basically a popcorn machine!
Orbit1 – Hey, if you can roast coffee at home then you should be able to electroplate at home!
Bruno – A clever add-on to your standard rubbish bin but slightly over priced for the real world.
nScope – A breadboard oscilliscope, function generator and power supply all driven by hackable software. Clever kiddies.
Meld – Like Lockitron for cooking. A control loop between the cooktop nob and the temperature in the pot.
Awire – I am not really sure there is a need for a UHF radio app but it can’t hurt to find out.
Countertop – A super smart digital scale that will control your health, happiness and cooking skills. Whatever.
Zensors – Use a smartphone or webcam to measure stuff happening in front of it and alert on changes to questions you ask. A clever integration mechanism.
Oomi – Another home automation kit, this time driven from a custom tablet-size remote control and a “cube” hub. This is another nice one but the market is getting seriously fragmented.
BuzWiz – My favourite! A big red button!

Left Fielders

CH4 – This guy is really trying to sell a fart tracker prototype.
Hop Theory – Turn shit beer into good beer by infusing flavours into it like tea.
Remix – A vaping hooka just looks so 2095. The advertising however is totall 1975. Cool men and sexy women doing cool things while smoking.

Shitstarters

Revolar – I don’t see how alerting your friends improves your safety. Sure, it might help you get out of a mess after the fact. Plus the odds are pretty good that your smartphone is the target of the attack.
UnitFi – Another dreamer who thinks Kickstarter is a license to print money but doesn’t want to give up his secrets.
Grinder gadget – WTF? Who brings a tablet to the poker table to intentionally distract themselves from playing too many hands.
Advicy – The product is sort-of interesting but too expensive. But they went WAY overboard with the cheesy heartstrings, music and voice-over.
Feelreal – You couldn’t pay me to put my head in that contraption. Sensorama was invented in the 70s by Samuel L. Bronkowitz and it lives on in Feelreal.
Ottobox – Good on him for trying but it would help if he had invented something that doesn’t already exist. Keep your eye on this kid though. If he doesn’t end up in trouble for false advertising (claiming 50% savings is not a good idea) he will build the next Nest.
Udoo Neo – If you can’t choose the best hardware for your project, just put them all in! Pi + Duino, Wifi + BT, plus some sensors. Hardly the size of a credit card, really.
Coral – Underwater video camera to detect drowing children. I have a much better idea, build a fence! This is a shitty product AND shitty video.
GeniCan – Way to steal Hiku’s ideas from start to finish. Good luck fullfilling the promises you made like aisle-by-aisle ordering and supermarket integration.

And remember, its only limited by your frigging imagination.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-04-20

Welcome to another week in Kickstarterland. We have some great campaigns for you this week including a robot that protects your car, a few more Wifi-enabled micros and a hackable dildo. For fun we have a bunch of shockers including two camera ideas gone very wrong.

Jamstik – Learn to play guitar on this tiny training guitar. It’s the future man.
Domino.IO – A hardware platform based on Arduino and OpenWRT but inclusive of a turnkey service platform for low volume manufacturing.
Sideclick – I can’t get my family to use the universal remote instead of the Roku remote. This resolves the resulting issue. Love it.
Bumper Bot – This is an awesome product and should include a video camera for capturing those that STILL hit your car.
ODiN – Not a world first (here and here) but still a clever concept. I would never use it because it looks stupid and I would look stupid.
DaVi – A really well thought out remote blind winder.
Droplet – These clever people have generalised the Bluetooth button really well.
Piccolino – Mini Arduino with Wifi, OLED, SD card and SPI SRAM for $30. Nice.
NodeUSB – An ESP8266 based micro with USB as the main connection method to plugin modules. Only $9.
WiPy – How about that, another Wifi development board, this time running Python on a TI CC3200. Good thing this one was designed to be fun.
Planty – Another connected planter. I can’t justify $79 on one plant but I still like the category.
Endless Computers – Not the first to build a low cost computer which uses a TV as a display but nicely done.
mBot – Another Arduino based robotics education program.
Perf+ – A proto board where you cut the traces out to connect neighbouring pins instead of wiring. Single use but fun.
CodeBug – A cute multi-LED PCB for teaching kids to program.
4SeTV – Four HDTV free-to-air digital streams to one tablet or TV. Nothing revolutionary but some people will like it. This is their second attempt and a much better one.
KosherSwitch – Words can’t describe how I feel about this. So I won’t share any.
Nextion – UART controlled TFT colour screens for makers. Pretty cheap and look like a great solution to the integration troubles with these screens.
EasyFinder – A standard BLE finder beacon built into a AAA or AA battery. Clever adaptation.

Left Fielders

Master Beta – Hack your sex toys with this Arduino dildo shield
Mastur Plan – With God and a bit of software we can solve the evil problem of masterbation. This really belongs in the Shitstarter list.
Mouse Minder – A smarter and more humane mouse trap. Who remembers the Imp mouse trap??
Shitstarters

RSSI Pro Track 5.8ghz Antenna Tracking System – Longest promotional video ever at 20+ minutes.
IoT relay – Not a terrible product but a shocking campaign. If you think it’s bad, you should see their web site: http://www.iotrelay.com.
Camlet Mount – Because your DSLR isn’t big and heavy enough yet, let’s go adding a mountain on top of it. Come on, really?
Turnikit – This is so wrong. The body is hardly the “worst” part of having a DSLR camera!
Shellfire VPN – I am not a fan of this campaign. Firstly its selling a hardware box that only connects to their platform, second they keep misusing the word “free” in their video and text.
Medwand – I literally fell asleep waiting for these old men to mention their product (90 seconds to get to it!)

And remember, its only limited by your frigging imagination.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-04-06

Welcome to another week in Kickstarterland. This week is all about STEM, Wifi and 3G devices and the occasional flame thrower. I am moving to a new routine of fortnightly updates as it takes too long to compile this every week. I am also going to be a bit more selective because the lists are getting too long. So I will be sharing the best and worst and skipping the middle.

Onion Omega – Another Linux and Wifi in a small package. Basically a cross between the Electric Imp and a Raspberry Pi. Definitely not the first but probably the most fun video of the lot.
Konekt Dash – Another 3G Arduino device with a cloud service attached. This space is getting busy.
Arachnio – Another Arduino with Wifi. Why build another one?
Jambé – Weapon of mass percussion. I am really enjoying the use of modern technology to invent new instruments.
Tiko – A really cheap unibody 3D printer.
Bocco – A bit of a rip off of Toymail but that’s life.
Plen – Why is it that all cool robots come out of Japan? This guy is pretty cute.
Codie – Another STEM robot with LOGO like coding tasks.
MudWatt – A bizzare STEM project that generates micro-watts of power from electricity generating bacteria in mud.
HiSmart – A smartish bag that doubles as a Bluetooth controller. Pretty innovative mashup of fashion, function and technology.
Wakē – Wakey wakey, hands of snakey. I can see their logic, morning alarms suck, but $200 is a bit steep for an alarm.
Sliip – Yet another sleep/wake aid, this time built into a pillow that moves. They reckon they can stop snoring partners. I know a wife that would like that!
Appkettle – The IoTea (Internet of Tea) has finally arrived. This is nicely done but who cares? How could such a boring product have such a long description? The Wifi feature promised turns out to be a highly unlikely stretch goal.
Disco Dog – If I had a dog … I would be down for this one!
KoalaSafe – A well considered home network management system for families with young kids. Pity it won’t get funded.
Lumo – Interactive projector with games for kids. I am not sure it will change the world but I have played with these at a couple of museums and they are lots of fun.
Neptune Suite – It’s a novel idea to put the brains in the smart watch and the interfaces in the peripherals. I firmly believe that Neptune is about 5 years to early for this and is going to be a shocking mess.
SoundBrenner Pulse – A wearable metronome. Awesome idea although not completely original.

Left Fielders

B Sensory – A Bluetooth connected vibrator that synchronises with erotic fiction. Really, what else could you ask for?
Volvorii – There is a lot of tech in here to make the shoes change a small pattern. Weird.
XM42 Flamethrower – Nah, I can’t see anything going wrong here. Perfectly safe. Perfectly reasonable tool to have at home.

Shitstarters

Flicc – What a stupid idea. Rather than discouraging people from walking while using their phone stick a forward facing camera on your case.
Omega Strip – Cable strips are hardly a unique or high tech product. I can’t imagine why anybody would back an 7-8 month project for something you can get at the hardware store.
Tritium – Awesome looking project but hardly a business. The Kickstarter community can’t have all that many skydivers in it. I think they have made a dangerous design choice having the indicator colours getting smaller as you fall. The whole thing should be red when you near the ground not just two-three LEDs.
Q-Light – These guys gave up their entire campaign after 5 days. As is usual for tech heads they think the product should sell itself and changing the product will fix all their sales problems.
Stesco – Use two iPhones on a selfie-stick to make a 3D video and look like double the dick.
Neobase – Has this just proven that people DON’T want their privacy back? Three years of work and nobody cares. This is why you release early!
kSafe – I remember my parents trying this kind of positive and negative rules … it never worked. I hope their many customers are more manipulatable than me. Their success proves that people are stupid.
Nyrius – Looks like they are just rebadging this. I bet Kickstarter shuts it down before the end.
Vaarz – These guys don’t really convince me that they will deliver. What’s really interesting is their $50,000 pledge tear pays back 5% of all sales. For now that means $50 return.
Calou – I genuinely like the product but why would they set their fixed funding target at 1.5m and why charge 400 for it? Their 11 minute video also breaks a record.
DasEgg – These Germans are nuts! $1500 to feed one plant?!?!?!
Friday Smart Lock – Because August, Lockitron and Sesame haven’t covered enough ground here.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-03-22

After taking a week off to go camping with the kids, I was hoping to come back to a glut of awesome new projects. Sadly, I was disappointed as most of this week’s projects are unoriginal. There are a few interesting projects such as connected footwear and magnetic liquids but nothing exceptional.

Night Runner – Headlights for your running shoes.
Orphie – LED lights in your shoes synced with music or movements. This is the 2015 I was looking forward to.
Ticket Overflow – An enterprising solution to enterprise support costs. Pool your funds, buy a support plan, submit everyones tickets in one month, post the results on StackOverflow.
DIY Home Automation – Become a Home Automation Hero by backing this project. Superb video even if the product isn’t going anywhere.
Stacker – Commercial grade 3D printer that can print up to four copies at once.
Soft Chomp – Finger toothbrush and book for brushing baby teeth without losing a finger. These are already in the shop.
Run Beacon – Add your treadmill data into your Fitbit history.
Audiocase – A large portable Bluetooth speaker for those who don’t with the 80s where a distant memory.
Ferrofluid – Magnetic liquid … so pretty 🙂
TurnsPro – Turns your camera on a timer. I would buy this if it handle DSLR better and included an intervelometer.
SpaceHarp – I wonder if you need to have long hair to use this product or if it makes your hair grow long. Why do people start projects with patents that are nearly 10 years old? Because Indiegogo is a haven for suckers.
Elf – Selfies from a 3D VR drone. I can’t fathom how sick I would feel with this on my head. Almost as funny as watching the 70’s dubbing in this video.
Rocketstar – They want to build a aerospike engine for future single-stage space launch. I don’t know why they can’t find their own money.
Xband – Very small Bluetooth LE + MCU + sensor
Pocketlab – Another BLE sensor kit but this one targeted at STEM education.
Growmotics – Something tells me this is for growing better weed.
Tegstove – A butane cooker which cooks your beans and charges your phone while camping.
Mask – I am not sure why you would want to wait until September when you can walk into a shop and buy one of these off the shelf.

Left fielders and Shitstarters – You can work out which is which

Road Warrior – Heater and Aircon for motorcycle riders. It looks so wrong but then I don’t ride a bike.
UviCube – For paranoid parents who think that washing bottles isn’t enough. It dries and blasts whatever you put in with UV rays.
Eyeprone – Improve your posture by lying on a masage table. Fricking genius!
Crankcase – This is a sad product for sad people. Plus there are plenty of these already on the market.
eDebut – Advertiser sponsored movies. How original. Totally unheard of. Why are people giving their money to these guys?
ConnectScale – BLE connected fishing scale for those who need four seconds back in their life. Solving the worlds difficult problems.

And remember, its only limited by your frigging imagination.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-03-08

Welcome to another week in Kickstarterland. This week we feature a couple of fascinating musical instruments, a block of metal and a hacking toolkit. The project names this week are horribly uninspiring. I probably won’t get a post out next week as I am taking the kids camping for the weekend. So I will see you again in two weeks. (Btw, Pebble Time has already broken the Kickstarter record at $17m with weeks to go.)

Instrument 1 – A new digital instrument that can be played like a guitar, violin, piano or a drum.
Keys – A modern keyboard with some capacitive sensors for gesture recognition. Great looking product but terribly generic name.
W3 Cube – A geometrically perfect cube of tungsten which is denser than uranium. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these little gems.
ChipWhisperer – Learn to break chip security the seriously high-tech way. This was the runner up of the Hackaday Prize.
Hackaball – A connected ball where kids can design their own group or individual games.
iSensor HD – An outdoor security camera. Pretty good for keep an eye on the pool.
Rocketbook – A weirdly wonderful dry erase notebook which scans really quickly and erases in the microwave.
Switchmate – Like Lockitron for light switches. Sits over your light switch and makes it smarter.
Monolith – Skateboard with motors inside the wheels. I think the only thing negative to say about this project is the battery life.
Podo – A camera that sticks to the wall for those with selfie issues.
Qii – A rollup keyboard. I am convinced that when projects have a fixed target of nearly $1m they don’t actually intend to deliver and are just testing the market.
The Egg – Storage device for your mobile or camera with a built in screen and wifi. It looks ok but nothing revolutionary.
Plantable Coffee Cup – Embedded with seeds to plant and grow new trees instead of discarding in the bin.
gMix – A batteryless 4-way stereo mixer. I am not sure the value of this but I am sure someone will love it.
Steampunk Nixie Clock – Because you can never have too many Nixie clocks.
Magnetic – Paper that sticks to anything dry without glue. Ironically, its not magnetic.
Trippy Clip – Holographic lens to make funky images in camera (phone).
Creek – Clock, intercom, charger. Basically, a cheap tablet without a paddle.
Norrom Aquarium – A pretty aquarium … but only for the UK. Great.
Tesla vs Edison – Someone actually made a card game out of these two inventors.
Piper – A minecraft game with a real-world breadboard as the controller
Blue Freedom – The pocket sized hydropower generator. I would like to see it actually work.
VIS – A flashlight and lantern that charges your phone AND your car battery.
Freiya – Bluetooth enabled watering can. WTF?
Playbulb – Bluetooth enabled LED solar garden light. At $26 a pop, its going to be expensive. It’s only redeaming value is that it is part of a family of LED products.
Plugzee – A simple Bluetooth to 3.5mm audio jack bridge. Basically a bluetooth headset without the speaker.
FlashQ Q20 – The sequel to last year’s FlashQ remote flash. I still like this range of products.
bloon – These guys want to take a 360 degree panoramic photo of the last total solar eclipse at the north pole for 500,000 years.

And remember, its only limited by your frigging imagination.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-03-01

Welcome to another week in Kickstarterland. We have some huge projects to discover this week! We have an Australian beehive breakthrough that allows beekeepers to (literally) tap their hive, a new colour Pebble watch, a 3G version of Spark, a GSM tracking device and lots more.

Flow Hive – Finally, someone has invented a bee hive that can be directly tapped for honey. Brilliant. Buy your own bee hive and make happier bees and keepers.
Pebble Time – The latest colour Pebble watch broke the record for the biggest opening day and it has barely moved since then. Not that I am scoffing at a healthy $11.65m!
Spark Electron – Another great offering from Spark, a version that uses GSM data instead of Wifi with them setting themselves up as an MVNO with global coverage.
iTraq – A GSM based tracker including a prepaid SIM card. This is a solution for a long standing set of problems and it looks like they have done an awesome job. There are some minor issues around batteries but I think it’s still a great solution.
Ringo – A great little Arduino robot critter.
Sesame – Another connected door opening like Lockitron and August. They are a bit cocky in their claim to have perfected the art of turning locks. I like that they offer a BluFi gateway to add Wifi connectivity. It adds a fair bit to the cost but it completes the solution without reducing battery life.
Cuberox – A small cube with a Linux box embedded and an uninterrupted six-sided LED display. It looks cute but I suspect it would get boring quickly.
Smart Rope – Uses a POV LED display to show you fitness data
PiJuice – Battery pack for the Pi. The Pi really wasn’t ever designed to be portable but these guys have done a neat job.
MIDIWidget – Interfaces to any MIDI output and converts it to GPIO outputs. This could be a fantastic tool for musical hackers.
Thermoneystat – Adjust your air-conditioner and heater by setting a budget and monitoring environment concerns instead of temperature.
Turning Shoe – Improve your swing and reduce strain on your legs and back by pivoting your sole. Sleep better at night by watching these videos.
EVShield – An Arduino shield for the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 hardware
Xeus Flashlight – Something simple and great about this survival flashlight project. Solar charged ultracapacitor instead of battery and fully sealed in a polycarbonate shell and filled with an epoxy resin.
Blub Uno – A single tube Nixy clock. It should have been a good way to save money and power and still have an awesome Nixy tube. But it’s not, it’s stupidly expensive.
UAmp – This DSP for your mobile phone is the best ever … because it’s made in Australia.
dSp – Yet another DSP for your mobile phone to improve the sound and volume of your portable music.
Apollo 11 VR Experience – This seems more like a 3D movie than a VR experience but it looks great thanks to their significant use of NASA file footage. The best part of this campaign is the freak demoing on his Oculus Rift in the mask. How did they find this guy and don’t they realise kids will have nightmares?
Fogo Adventure Gadget – What else do you call a torch / GPS / Walkie Talkie / Radio / Messenger / anything else it wants to be?
AMPL – Everyone loves a bag with a device charger but this doesn’t look all that much better than buying a portable power cell and using your favourite bag.
The Juicer – I have always thought that you should be able to donate power to someone else from your phone.
Neo Smart Jar – At $50 a jar, its an expensive way to upgrade your kitchen. But I like where they are going and in time it could be the standard approach and drop in price.
Ovrvision Pro – This is a crappy presentation but seems like a logical addition to a VR headset. I would expect this to be the norm in the future.

Shitstarters

FlyShark – This smartwatch looks remarkably similar to and just as bad as the Android one I got on Kickstarter last year. They lie in their advertising by suggesting you can take a selfie but the camera is not on the face, its on the side.
LAB aerial bot – I really don’t want my phone going up in a drone given every drone I have ever had ended up stuck in a tree.
KegData – Make sure you never run out of beer in your keg. Brought to you by two lushes who think $200-300 plus $10 a month is going to fly.
Project Exergy / Henry – Transfer heat from all those inefficient data centers and computers into your home to reduce waste. Nothing to see here, please keep moving.
RuggedPOD – Someone forgot to tell these guys that the computing world has moved to the cloud. I am sure there are still a few uses for this kind of device, maybe on farms.
CargaPlus – Nope, this guy is definitely not going to take your money and run. Never.
Origibot – It takes a lot of video editing to make this robot looks this bad. Even grandma wasn’t impressed. Although, it does remind me of the skitters in Red Dwarf.
Ecani – This guy is well on his way to $5m of funding to be an alternative hydro plant in order to reduce the cost of the existing hydro plant. Right. This is why flexible funding is just wrong.
Rent a person – Pay for someone to wear a god aweful helmet on the other side of the world and control them remotely. Clerly this guy wants to see someone else having the sex that he will never have.

Left Fielders

Oloring – Discretely electrocute your penis into life. You can choose a greater orgasm or to delay your orgasm. What a useful tool for pleasing your woman.
Potty Glo – Make your toilet glow so you don’t fall in the loo when your kids leave the seat up. Made in California, solving the worlds greatest problems.
PIVOT – Political issues aside, this looks like an interesting project but the cost of collecting and maintaining the content will bankrupt them before their community delivers enough of their own content to make it worth while.

And remember, its only limited by your frigging imagination.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-02-22

Welcome to another week in Kickstarterland, and its jam packed with huge projects. Read about bone conducting glasses, gamified trash, pigeons and a $400 electric bike.

Glow Headphones with Laser Light – Seriously, how could you go wrong with fricking laser beams in headphones!?
Soundglasses – Sun glasses with built in Bluetooth bone conducting headphones. I am still waiting for my first bone conducting headphones I backed in 2013. The only issue I see is wearing your glasses with clear lenses to make a phone call at night.
Fly12 cycling camera – This bicycling attachment has lights, camera, batteries and continuously looping memory. Awesome.
Pon – A puncture-less push pin. Sometimes the lowest tech innovations are the most fun.
National Paper Airplane Contest – I rest my case Your Honour.
XLR-ONE Personal Robot Companion – Seriously, who has $1500 to invest in a half-arsed toy like this?
OctoFire 8 Port USB 3.0 Hub – More ports, more joy. 8 is still not enough for my house.
$400 Electric Bike – Second time is the charm. At $400 it’s really really tempting.
Shrinkified Arduino – For when an Arduino is an overkill, here is the Tiny Arduino. Faster than nothing! Less powerful than a toy locomotive! Unable to leap even small buildings in a single bound. But small and cheap.
RasPiO Duino – … or for when your Arduino isn’t enough why not strap it on the back of a Raspberry Pi for fun.
007 “Agent” – Move the user interface functionality onto a PIC based daughter board over UART. Looks like it was designed in the 60s but still useful for many people.
Clinicloud – Home digital medical equipment (initially stethoscope and thermometer) for guilty mothers. As a father many times over, I don’t need or want these things.
Screenstick Joystick – Not the first but a great looking product and definitely one of the cheesiest videos I have seen in a while.
Goodnight Lad – Another second attempt gone right. A really fun looking kids book with an augmented reality companion app. I hope this is the first of many such books as my kids would love it.
Robocore – The brain of your next robot project. It looks like they have just taken the Lego Mindstorms open source project and wrapped it in a nice video. If they don’t add some unique and original value, it will be disappointing.
Pigeon – Another wifi and Bluetooth connected digital picture frame. There have been lots of these in the last few years but I like this one. It seems to have all the bits I needed two years ago.
Zrro – Android based game console for TVs with cool conductive hover technology. Great video, clever product. It should be a winner and a game changer for this niche.
ISS Above for Raspberry Pi – Tracks the ISS on your HDTV plus adds a wearable LED badge that lights up whenever the ISS is above. A nice evolution.
Kanega Watch – Wearable old person monitor and watch. The mum sounds more robotic than the watch in this video but the daughter/founder has some good credentials.
ICeU Spectres – A personal aircraft with VTOL and a seriously cute kid. Great combination.
Cognitoys – It looks great but I am generally cynical about kids toys. I will wait and see if they can deliver on the promise. But if they have IBM and Watson behind them it could be interesting to watch.
Skyprowler – This is a high speed, long range, VTOL drone aircraft and it scares the bejesus out of me.
Radium – A Geiger counter for the masses. I can just see the look on the supermarket attendant when you pull out your Radium and wave it over their fruit.
Tetrabin – You know this is an Aussie project because its a rubbish bin not a trash can. Gamification of rubbish. Who knew that was a thing.
Rayger – LED light strip controller that reacts to music. Why does everyone think they are the first? Dude!
OWL drop-in filter adapter – Clever idea to put the filter behind the lens instead of in front and then make it hot swappable. I don’t believe it adds enough value to make it a mainstream product but it is still pretty cool. Pity it only work for mirror-less bodies, not SLRs. The video reminds me of an old Bruce Lee film.

Shitstarters

Sound Torch – Assuming he edited his own videos, this guy is on psychedelic drugs. If he paid someone else to do it, they might be tripping together.
iBridge Translation App – Since when is KS a app searching service. These guys are clearly not looking for assistance in developing their app, they are looking for customers. This app is nothing new at all.
Goto Browser – On one hand I applaud these young kids for their entrepreneurship but on the other hand, their motivation, idea and resulting product are seriously useless. It looks like a project for their mates funded by their family.
Lenzindex – I don’t mind the concept but £5 per sticker is absurd. Plus it won’t help with large lenses that lie on their side.
Pi Debug Clip – I am not a Pi user but this seems like a good enough product. But Ryan really should find a friend who doesn’t have a lisp to read out “Mac OSX” for him. I am a mean bastard, I know.
Steam Age Tech – As an adult I find the confluence of science, technology and history fascinating. My kids expect way more to keep them interested. Plus this guy doesn’t have much of a clue how to make quality videos.

Left Fielders

Beam Smart Projector – This weird project plugs a projector into a light socket for power. Why? What is wrong with using a GPO for power? Maybe if all you want is to have a screen on your desk but surely a monitor does that pretty well.
Rocket Ride – A slap on dildo for a couple to enjoy together with a founding engineer names Max Peak.
Beater Meter – Wanking in the 21st century involves a smartwatch application with social media integration.
Moocall Sensors – Sends the farmer an SMS when his cow is about to calf. This isn’t a crowd funded project, but I couldn’t resist including it!

And remember, its only limited by your frigging imagination.

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-02-15

Welcome to another week of Kickstarterland. This episode showcases the best and worst of ideas including two battery projects, connected skipping ropes, wooden sex machines, home urinals and an attempt to fly a drone over North Korea.

ExoDrive Case – Aussie made SD card case for smart phones. Seems a bit obvious yet nobody is making them.
OneNet Open Switch – I can’t really see the use of a software defined network but there are freaks and academics out there for every project.
Bettery – Subscription rechargeable batteries swapped at a local kiosk. Surely rechargeable batteries solve exactly the same problem?
Lightor – Battery with a build in USB port for charging. It’s an overkill but darn it, it’s clever.
Zip Rings – Dental floss rings that solve a problem I never knew we had.
Milk Nanny – After four kids, I can’t say that making formula bottles with the most difficult of the chores. Dealing with the breast-is-best psychos was much more challenging.
Sophia – A slightly modern twist on the old counting skip rope. Apparently a direct copy of Jumpiing but they are now all friends and its ok.
Light Show – A beautiful sculpture, puzzle and interactive LED light.
Gas Sense – Somewhat reminiscent of Quirky’s Refuel only using some sort of thermal imaging technology.
Creek – This looks rather like an Android tablet on a stand. But this clock is also another smart home controller. Why?
Chat Light – A light for your phone, tablet or laptop for better quality videos and selfies.
Shortcut-S – I have to admit I struggle to remember shortcuts so this product appeals to me.
Mu System – Pretty neat and tidy international USB charger.
Bluewire – Bluetooth headset that records conversations. It looks like a really useful product but the absurdity of sending conversations back to the phone by Bluetooth instead of the phone recording them is laughable. Also, they need to decide how the product is spelled.
Catsomat – Multicat refrigerated Wifi-enabled feeder. I still stand by letting them eat mice.
Pixsso – I never tire of seeing ePaper applications. This is a simple product but a worthy one.
VisionCube – HD wifi connected mini projector. Something tells me these guys are not going to deliver anything.
Broogs Smart Lamp – I am still waiting for my last lamp KS project to deliver. I am also not sure I could back a founder named “teddy bear”.

Shitstarters

Kitsch – Even when translated this makes no sense. 100,000 euro in one weekend and they are just at concept stage.
Bug-a-salt – Torment flies with this weapon of messy destruction.
HandEnergy – Charge your phone by masturbating.
Wallflowers – Easily the worst video pitch all year. The product is so-so but the video takes it down to the gutter level.

Left fielders

Main Drain – A home urinal for men who would prefer to pee on a tree than in the loo. This is so very wrong. I can just picture the mess after a drunken visit to the loo.
Tesla Coils for North Korea – These morons want to raise funds to build a kerosine powered drone to fly into North Korean and back.
Adulte.toys – How can you ignore a project titled “Wooden Sex Toys and Fucking Machines”.

As always, it’s limited only by your frigging imagination!

This week in Kickstarterland – 2015-02-11

Welcome to another week of Kickstarterland. This episode is chock full of awesome and horrible projects covering (and apparently revolutionising) religion, sex, relationships and physics. We have connected dildos, robotic and electronic prayers, connected cups and power generation from urine.

Voltera – A circuit board printer which solders, places parts and reflows automatically. If this delivers on the promise, it could be a game changer for many.
Luna
– An electric blanket that is so smart it detects your sleep patterns, turns off your TV, locks your doors and makes you coffee in the morning. Pass.
Coolbox – A blatant ripoff of the Coolest Cooler but for your tools. At least they did a good job.
3DRacers – A 3d printed, real-world racing game. Finally, something to use that useless printer for!
Flotilla – Yet another hardware hacking kit, this time Pi bases and from the UK. These look pretty good but so do most of the others.
EasyPlug Air – Wow, another Arduino sensor kit. This one using the magic of wireless technology!
DuinoKit Jnr – This may not be the best video but it is one of the best electronics discovery kits which blends the Arduino with the old electronics kits.
OpenMV Cam – Python based open source machine vision hardware. The last MV camI purchased is sitting in a box somewhere.
Bluemometer – General purpose, waterproof, bluetooth thermometer.
Spider Wifi – Dual channel 2.4ghz router for lots of speed and to blast the neighbours off your channels.
Chop-E – An electric bike in a shape inspired by a Harley Davidson motorcycle. With a top speed of 35 km/h, you probably can’t use the roads safely.
Hive – A home automation, control, entertainment and security system. At list this one looks pretty.
xRemote – Another home automation platform (basically a remote control hub) that believes they have done something new. I have news for them. I wonder how many of these companies will be broke within 24 months.
Vexbox – A tool for parents who want their kids to hate them. It throttles the speed of specific websites. These guys don’t live in the same world as me.
Rouncer – Sometimes I just don’t get why people back a particular project. This is a perfectly fine looking mandolin tool but it doesn’t look any better than the other 100 products already on the market.
Coordimate – A rubber stamp that prints an empty cartesian graph. Clever, clever tool for all maths students. I imagine this will be the first of many useful stamps.
Piezo Film Speaker – This guy has come up with some great scientific projects and this is up there. Plus he says its only limited by your frigging imagination!
Neoh – A pretty obvious solution of adding motion sensing to headphones to allow 3D sound to work. But a really badly executed attempt at a funny video. And their claim of being the first is a bit silly as the Rondo Motion was on Kickstarter in 2013.
Kinskii – Share fun times with your kids when you are out of town. I appreciate what they are trying to achieve but I don’t think they hit it.
Daisy – Monitor your potted plant health from your phone. The product looks ok but these muppets are going to learn a tough lesson about the economics of business soon.
TarDisk – I don’t get it. This seems to be just a high capacity SD card.
LensRacks – I wish I had enough gear to justify this solution.
Smartstones – “Pioneering non-verbal communication.” I don’t really believe the world needs this, even if the video is slick and the product looks like a pebble. But I appreciate the attempt.
Entacup – Quantum entanglement for coffee cups. Like Smartstones but with coffee cups instead of rocks. Still just as pointless.
Tlinkle – When it rains, it pours. This is a connected team cup!
Carvi – A team of back seat drivers criticising you while you drive. The minor failure of this concept is most people think they are great drivers and don’t need help. Maybe a product like this should be mandatory for all drivers for the first five years of driving.

Left Fielders

Bilal Robot – This might have been an interesting project except that they are asking for more than a half million dollars. It teaches you to pray, to speak arabic AND to do maths in arabic! It even comes with a comprehensive patent.
365 Watch – For people who don’t have the time to read your bible every day … carry it around on your wrist.
Miss on the Go – Teledildonics at its finest. You can pleasure yourself, your partner or a complete stranger. All while doing your Kegels. Good to see that Canadians do relieve themselves.
g.vibes – A second company revolutionising sex with a remotely controllable dildo. They all seem to be made by geeks with a front-woman. No hamsters required.

Shitstarters

Spark – A watch that zaps you every time you zone out. I can’t think of a stupider product (except for while you are driving). How about a watch that helps you sleep better at night or does your chores for you so you aren’t so bloody tired!?
Ion Earth – A really clever idea but sadly a useless campaign. Someone with proper skills and budget needs to build this.
Coolest Clock – This is not as cool as the Coolest Cooler nor is it ever going to be built as presented. Backers be ware, my shit detector is going off.
Hybox – Apparently you can pee, cry or spill your soda on a Graphene plate and generate enough electricity to charge a smartphone. My guess is that won’t stand up to any sort of scrutiny.
MediaBox – Someone in South Africa forgot to check out Roku and every Android media player on Ebay.

As always, it’s limited only by your frigging imagination!
